Dmurph and I were out yesterday fishing close to home on a small flow. We had a good time casting flies and catching a few fish untill we pulled up to our truck and then it started....
Two guys "locals" were also taking out for the evening. As they were walking up the bank, we notices the two stringers of large smallmouth laying in the back of the truck. A few 4 pounders, some three's, and the rest were 2.5s. I don't know if anyone else would feel like i did but i felt devistated. Not that the two guys caught a bunch of fish, i was excited that they had a good time, but that was quickly overtaken by anger for not putting them back. And.... they were going into the cooler to a "friends house".
How many "friends" friends can we feed before we realize that those fish were probably caught 5 or 6 time before, the four pounders were 4 to 5 years old, and that everytime that happens, it diminishes the spawning population. I dont think anything is wrong with sombody keeping one or two small immature fish, but 3 and 4 pounders.... Its not like were fishing in on Lake Erie.....Thats the best and fastestnway to mess up a small fishery... Any thoughts?
I guess some people just dont appriciate what the fish can do "in the water" than on the table. I feel like if you need food, go to bi-low and by some chicken or somthing. Or if you have to eat fish, go bream fishin or catch a few catfish and leave the smallmouth alone. Just my thoughts.
I just wanted to see if any of you would feel the same way, or have any thoughts on the matter and what can a guy like me do to help protect our small local fisheries when people are technically not "breaking the laws".
Thanks for your imput.
