I shot a lot of photos in 2011 but this northern watersnake is by far my favorite. I was wading the Fox River and spotted one sunning on a laydown near shore. I waded over and moved in for the photo, but caught an underwater branch with my wading boot. The snake spooked and slithered off into the water. My chance was blown. Then I noticed another snake sunning, higher up in the branches of the next laydown. I had to weave my way through the branches and even when nearby, the snake was still overhead. I extended both arms above my head and tried to steady the camera and get a decent shot. I took about ten shots and the snake never spooked. Don't think the flash ever even fired. As you can see it is puffing up a bit, but overall it remained calm and just let me snap away. When I got home and reviewed, I was pleased that a few of the shots turned out really nice. This is the best one. I love the soft look to it.
