    Default Brazos River 8-30-11

All right, arrived at the bridge at 05:40 and was fishing right at light. I started out going down stream and threw a PoP R and got some blow ups but no takers. Then I switched to a Fluke and stuck some small largemouth and broke off two on 8# test. The I switched to a Bill Norman crank and got all kinds of bites. I caught Spots, Largemouth, Smallmouth, 2 Channel cats and 2 Drum and tons of Sandies large and small, Bluegill, Green Sunfish and Longear. I caught over 30 fish today, lost count. I am trying to target Smallmouth and Largemouth, but everything was willing to bite. I have not figured out rhe Smallmouth pattrern until today. I caught 13 Smallmouth, all were small. I had a 2# Smallie on, but he jumped and spit it back at me. I caught a lot of Largemouth and spots, mostly in the 1# range. I missed a few fish today that I don't stick. I lost several ok fish that jumped and spit them back at me, aaaggggghhhh! I did manage to stick one 21" long and weighed 5#13oz on a Senko before I left. At noo I noticed the fire starting and a few hours later it was really big. The smoke blocked the Sun to the point that I did not get all that hot. There were airplanes and helicopters all over the place trying to put out the fire. The firetrucks and Forestry Service dozers and equipment started rolling in. The fire was very close, as ash was falling all over me. I left and got backto the truck around 5:00 and the Sherrif was waiting for me to make sure I got out. Highway 16 was closed when I left, barely made it out.! Here are a few pics...

Nice fish. Glad to see the fire and smoke didn't mess you up too bad, that could've been dangerous.

Looks like a great trip! Congrats on the big girl and very cool smoke pics at the bridge.

What species is that first one? The horizontal lines at the bottom remind me of a white or striper, but otherwise it looks like a spot. That not what you were calling a sandie is it?

The spots I have caught in NC and VA don't have such pronounced horizontal lines on the sides of their underbellies. I have only caught them in the Yadkin, which is a muddy river and washes out the markings almost all the time, and the Staunton, which isn't so muddy and has beautiful spotted bass when the water is clear, but without those markings.

I have heard a rumor of spots and smallies crossing, who knows for sure.

The spots that I have caught in the Ozarks did not have them either. Texas fish id shows them to have the lines towards the belly.

Almost looks like the Guad/Smallie hybrids that we catch in the Colorado all the time
