Nice Reds. I have been dying to down to LA to catch some. One day I'll make it. As for the troubles throwing the heavier fly, I can't say for sure since I was not there to see what was going on. Obviously an 8 wt. will give you more power to throw bigger flys. If you learn the double haul casting technique you will also be able to throw bigger flies farther. In the double haul you pull the fly line in once on the back cast and once on the forward cast to create more line speed which is essential for long casts with big flies. If you haven't learned to double haul then you should google it or check for videos on youtube. I have a Joan Wulff casting video that is great for beginners as well as experienced fly fisherman who want to fine tune their casting. I highly recommend it. I pick up something new to enhance my technique everytime I watch it. If you want to take your bass and redfish fishing to the next level, learn to haul if you haven't already.
