Today I met up with Finstalker for a New River float. It was an outstanding day of fishing with many quality smallies, good sized redeyes (rock bass) and even a few bull bluegills caught. The first part of the float is mainly deep flat water that takes you to a Dam. Once you get to the Dam you have to portage a good little ways and go down a fairly steep bank with your gear. Not an easy thing to do and probably a good reason why you don't see many people on the water in this section of the river. This is also the reason that the fishing is so good and well worth the effort, the fish receive little fishing pressure and there are some very good spots along the way that produced quality fish.
Finstalker hooked into the 1st nice smallie of the day.
Things started to heat up once we portaged and got below the Dam. This was the first time I had seen the dam without water flowing over the wall. I was able to walk across the rocks below the dam to work some faster water that was coming out of the discharge to the far right of the dam it wasn't long before several nice extremely feisty smallies were hooked. I also had a 1 that got away that jumped at least 4' in the air to throw my lure, it was an awesome site even though I didn't catch it but it was a big one.
Once we got back into the yaks to continue our way down river from the dam area Finstalker hooked into another fine smallie.
The rolling hills, the beautiful scenery and unusual water hazards are just a bonus to the fish being caught.
There were many smallies in the 10" to 12" range and a few beyond that.
Finstalker was determined to get a smallie on a topwater bait and had one blow up on it and then throw the lure when it jumped. A small ways down from there I noticed a spot where a smallie was chasing some bait and almost beached itself going after it. Fin threw his Heddon Torpedo in that area and it was fish on!
Right up to the take out area we were still hooking good fish, this last one might have been the chunkiest one of the day for me.
A fantastic day of fishing we caught alot of fish and alot of good quality fish. Thanks to Finstalker for sharing another great day on the New River!
