Default Fishing BSF and learning to improvise (pic heavy)

Man we've been trying to get to BSF all summer, but the rain just wouldn't allow it. So when the gauges were showing 500CFS we knew it should be crystal clear and great for fishing , so we packed up for a two day trip. Steve (Justaddwater) and I headed out while sending Tim (plantmastertim) a call and PM to get him to come down. We arrived Friday night and set up camp looking forward to a Saturday morning trip. When we arrived at the river the flow was perfect but had a bad stain to it (you could see only two ft down in the water at best). But we were determined to fish it regardless and we caught some fish just not any huge ones. The river dropped about three feet during the day which didn't help the fishing but the trip was a beautiful one.

They weren't giving but a slight chance of rain for Sat but that evening it started with a few showers and when we got off the river it came down in buckets. We had gotten in touch with Tim Fri night and he was coming down Sat evening to fish Sunday. He was almost there by the time we knew BSF would be up and Muddy Sun. So Steve and I knew of a trib of BSF that we had been wanting to fish but had never gotten around to it. So while I waited on Tim at camp Steve headed out to look at the trib and try and get some local info on PI/TOs. Steve did well and we had a float for Sun but knew nothing about the flow other than the TO/PI and that it was a good smallie stream. Well it turned out it was a hidden jewel and rescued the trip for us. This is a small flow but the thing is full of smallies and it holds some good size fish. This is what we saw at the put in.

This flow was really low but the shoals were very short with long still sections which made it fairly easy float. We caught a bunch of fish and some nice ones for such a small flow.

Sorry for these two fuzzy pics.

Thanks Steve and Tim for being real troopers and hanging in there with this old man through thick and thin.

Looks like a great time and great water. Too bad the fish weren't going crazy! I love the big ol boulders and cliffs above the water.

    Excellent write-up and pictures.
    I enjoyed it.

That was a great trip and I can't wait to explore that stream more. Next time I sure hope we have a better idea of how long the float is between PI/TO though. We reached one possible TO point at about 7:00pm, the locals had said they thought it was about 2 more miles on down so we went for it hoping to make the most of the evening bite. We ended up getting off the river well past dark, 10:30 or so I think . I'm really glad Tim reminded me to get my headlamp, and that we didn't miss the take out in the dark or we would still be paddling.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to fishing that stream again, but we need to cut those last two country miles out of the trip.

You all see that Coleman canoe, well the boat I have been using for years is a sit in old town kayak and it was killing me to fish out of. Not enough room for anything and by the end of the day I was always just killed from having to lift myself out of that thing. If I had been on this trip in that it would have been really rough. Alan had the idea to install a center seat on that red beast and it made a world of difference. I can even stand and fish in that sucker and actually the paddling was easier than in my yak, which really surprised me. I just want to thank fisher for spending the day helping me and putting his considerable skills to work. When I get out of the unemployed state I'm in I might spring for a better ride, but I might just stick with the beast and put a sticker on her saying "Don't laugh, its paid for."

Leave the tent and bring more granola bars and beef jerky. It's to warm to freeze to death but a man could starve to death on that section.

Those last couple miles on a long, unfamiliar float, can be the worst. Glad you guys caught some fish all the while discovering yourself a nice little river to fish.

Great post, havent seen stained water like that since early april. You guys should be glad your getting rain its dry up here in these hills. The greenbrair river is as low as i have ever seen it, the new is still fishable but low and clear. If any you guys know a good rain dance let me know. Great looking fish and water.
