This stuff is thick
This shot is too pretty not to share
This is one of my favorite places to fish because I don’t really fish a lot of places with thick aquatic grass. This lake is truly a jungle of matted coontail mixed with lily pads and stumps. I am not sure if it’s the scenery, the challenge, or the big fish that keeps me coming back to this private south Georgia lake.
This morning started out with a malfunction of the trolling motor on my cousins jon boat. Luckily he had a few kayaks around so I just threw my gear in the yak and took off. I spent the morning buzzing frogs over the mats and my first 8 bites were short strikes. That’s just part of topwater grass fishing. Eventually they started getting the hooks and I ended up with 6 bass on the frogs and 2 on a flipping jig. This 4.5 pouder was the biggest. On my first cast across a bend in a creek channel that meandered through the coontail I saw a V-wake behind the bait but no take. I threw the exact same cast again and varied the speed of my frog until Billy Bad Bass flushed the toilet on it right next to the yak. He jumped once and dove into the grass but my 20# power pro cut through the grass like a razor and I brought him to hand.
He ate that ragetail shad pretty good
A couple more looks
All in all it was a beautiful morning in a beautiful place. I can’t wait until the next family get together down here.
