I was dipping 2 cans of Grizzly a day for a very long time. That's way too much.

I scaled back to one can every 3 days now.

I think I may quit when i get down to my last can(one left)

Any smokers, or chewers wanna quit with me?

It won't be easy, but it's likely worth the effort.

I am a former smoker and I just want to say good for you. Nothing is worse for your health than tobacco. When you quit, you have so many more years of fishing that you can enjoy

I grew up when the "Malboro Man", James Dean, and every cowboy in every western I ever saw smoked or chewed so to be the tough dude that I thought I wanted to be I just had to smoke. Gave it up 20 plus years ago - hard to do - but one of the best things a person can do for their health.

However, no guarantee that you're home free when you do manage to quit. My brother-in-law quit about 10 years ago. Last week he found out that he's got a softball size cancer tumor on one of his lungs. But regarless of that, in my opinion a person should make every effort to do those things that could possibly add years to one's ability to spend time with family or for that matter chasing some of the fish we enjoy going after.

Patrick, I sincerely wish you the best in your efforts because I had another fishing buddy of mine who was a dipper and he's no longer around because several years ago he died of esophageal cancer. I don't know if it was because of his tobacco habit but his doctor sure thought it was. What I do know is that fishing buddies are hard to replace.

Also, don't get discouraged if you slip up. Just keep trying. It took me several tries before I could unhook. One time I was clean for one year before I started back and another time for two years (what's strange is the first year of that effort I was in Viet Nam and could get all the cigs I wanted for 10 cents a pack - imagine that). Finally quit on the ump-teenth try, partially due to some urging from my son (nothing like looking a youngster in the eye and realizing that he's wiser than you at that moment).

Good luck Patrick. I think for me it is equal parts behavioural habit and nicotine addiction. Its been about a can a day for 20 years now. I've always used Copenhagen and probably would have quit a few years ago if they hadn't come out with Copenhagen pouches about that time. Its too easy to hide from the wife and others with pouches. If I still had to put in a huge dip of fine cut and had residual leftovers in my teeth when I spit it out it would be too obvious. Good luck to you and hopefully I'll be there a quitter there with you in the near future.

Would like to say I'll do it with you, but I may try this winter. Been dipping for 25 years.

    Good luck Patrick.

I can't quit because I dont consider myself a smoker. Just a bum'r. For some reason I can have a couple smokes, then not want one for months.

quit before...lasted a couple months...the first month is AWFUL...after that, if you got some willpower you can do it
Give a man a fish...he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish...his wife won't see him much.

Good luck on your wise decision. I was a can a day Grizzly man myself. Quitting was one of the hardest things I have ever done. I started out with the "cold turkey" method and quickly realized that wasn't going to work. The Commit Lazenges (sold OTC @ Wal Mart) worked for me. I would pop one in just like a dip whenever I felt the urge. The only draw back to them was that they started giving me heartburn. Luckily that was at the end of my quitting and I didn't need them anymore.
