    Default SC Striper's Stomach Contents

Kept one for a change. I felt a stomach full of hard objects when I filleted him, so I investigated.

1 half digested fish of some kind, 4 crawfish, and a gumball from a sweetgum tree.

Anyone ever caught a striper on a jig before? I might give the X-Rap a break and start bottom-bouncing a Yum Crawbug or a jig n pig now.

I have caught quite a few on a wooly bugger fly which can look like a crayfish.

Very interesting. I always think of stripers as mostly baitfish eaters.

That's interesting. I'm with BS..thought stripers mainly fed on baitfish.

Maybe cause the fish was caught in a river, it is more opportunists? Maybe no big schools of shad.

I'll remember this next time I am in a river that contains stripes.

Crawfish = interesting, but the sweetgum ball is just bizarre. Maybe I should quit tying flies in the garage and go rake the backyard for some naturals! Wonder if it's best to fish them with short strips on a sinking line or just drift them on top!

I've had a couple good days for stripers running upriver to spawn on my flow with large tubes bounced along eddy lines in rapids just above the tideline. I cast upstream and reeled back to keep a tight line as the current washed the tube towards me.

I missed one tonight one a bottom-bounced crawfish bait. In this tailrace river, the water is cold (50 degrees year round) and there's not much in terms of baitfish besides a few shad that make the run this far up and stocked trout, so I guess it only makes sense for them to eat the apparently abundant crawfish. I've cleaned trout that were full of snails and crawfish too.

Definitely eye opening for me as I saw them as baitfish eaters, too.

Trout love the craws too...wooly bugger's etc mimic those.

The Lake Lanier striper record (47lb 12oz...caught last year) was caught on a 4 inch lizard in 6 feet of water just off the bank! Like most fish...they'll eat anything they believe to be worth eating...even a sweetgum gumball
