    Default New to forum,Howdy

Hello, great forum about my kind of fishing, Texas Rivers! My usual rivers are the Blanco, North LLano,
and Cibilo Creek. I have fished the Brazos before, a great trip.

I have not ever done much winter time fishing , what pointers can anyone provide.

I have a kayak and also wade fish in the warmer months. I don't fish fly, but use light weight baitcasting
    gear.

Welcome Alex, you will find a lot of useful information on this site as well as a bunch of nice people who all have the same passion.
As far as the rivertime fishing it will depend on where you fish. On the Colorado we use a lot of Jig w/ Craw trailers. On the Guad it depends, upper area I downsize and fish at the edge of the current and on the lower I fish it with normal bass gear.
    Good fishing.

Thansk, Just Fish. How do you feel the last drought has affected the bass? i believe you posted some pics of the Gaud being bone dry. The Blanco, which I noramlly
fish was too bone dry in many places. My son and I fished the headwaters just before the drought broke. We were happy to find some spring feed pools with fish
    in them.

There are still fish in there. On the upper Guad you wont have much luck on guality of fish but you will catch a lot of fish. I use wee pop-r's and beetle spins on ultralight. The fish get larger once you get past the Rebecca Creek crossing. Above Bergheim the fish size increases as well.

Welcome to RiverBassin, glad to see another Texan on the board! I have not fished much in the winter either, too busy hunting, but look around on the site and there are a couple threads/articles on winter fishing.

Welcome to the site. You asked about the drought...It killed 95% of all catchable bass in the Blanco. It is my opinion that the bass in the Blanco need a break. I won't fish there for at least 2 more years. Your question about winter fishing is a good one. I think the best river fishing in the winter is fly rodding for catfish. The channel cats get active and mobile in the winter time and become very susceptible to a black wooly bugger worked very slowly. Cast it far in front of them and let it sink to their level. Don't move it at all when he sees it. Hang on, they like to go up under a cut bank. Good luck!

Thanks to everyone for the great welcome.
Limestone Cowboy, if you don't mind me asking. Being from LA. what is your connection to the Blanco River. I myself have not fished it since a few months before the
drought ended. The only water that maintained any kind of level was the dammed section around town. These are part of the city's water system, so they
are highly protected by the city. This is where I start to fish when I get back on the river.
I do not flyfish, but use a long light weight baitcasting rig. I can cast a unweighted wacky worm with ease. Knowing this, what kind of lure could I use for the catfish?

How many of you have tried the hollow body frogs on your river and what has been the response?

Alex My real name is Kelly Watson. I guided the Blanco for 10 years. I had a house on the water in Kyle for 4 of those years. I sat back and watched that river die. At the end I was walking in what used to be 9 ft deep pools, that were 6 inches deep and you could pick the fish up by hand. I knew it was going to be at least 5 years until the river came back, so I moved to LA. I have been back at least once a year and did informal snorkeling surveys of the pools by my old house. I did see the makings of a comeback, but I still would not fish for bass in the middle and lower sections that took the worst of the drought. Now the catfish should be ok, but if you see only a few, please release them also. I found that catfish there will not touch a plastic worm. I don't know why. My go to bait for spinning rod for catfish would be a black or purple one inch crawfish imitation on a crappie jig head. These fish are very skittish to the lure, so make sure to cast it way in front of them and let it sink to the bottom. Then try to angle the slow retrieve to get it in front of their face. Once they see it, don't move it.They either grab it , or take off. Have fun with the cats. They fight really hard!
