With all this rain we've had in the southeast over the past several weeks, my local flow had finally cleared enough that I could actually wade and see if the smallies were hitting topwater yet. I stopped and fished a couple of hours after changing into my wading pants and a t-shirt at the office last evening.

Still catching a lot of small males, but the fish seem healthy and ready to take a popper. The redbreast sunnies are in full spawning colors also, and can't resist a smaller offering fished in the slow water. Nothing like a couple of warm sunny days to get them and me back in a good mood after a week of rain, rain and more rain! Were out of the drought here in East TN now.

I was using a 1970 vintage Silaflex fiberglass 6wt and some of my foam poppers for the smallies.

I think redbreast are as pretty as any appalachian brook trout. next time I'll have a little 3wt !

Went back last evening and the water level and clarity were perfect. I took my ultralight Lamiglass 6.5ft 3wt. This is a very soft action rod perfect for bream and brook trout. I fished for redbreast for an hour or so and caught plenty, but I was catching as many juvenile smallmouth on the little popper (#8 Walt's). I decided to put on a bass sized #2 foam popper and see how the little rod would perform. Here's a few redbreast picts.

The decision paid off and I had a great evening with lots of chunky Smallmouth putting a nice bend in the light rod.

Where's all my fellow Tennesseeans at? The smallies are hitting topwater, lets see some more reports!

Nice report Troutman. I'm going this weekend to see if they are hitting top-water a little north of you in KY. We have had the same problem with all the rain and our flows are just now looking right for this time of year. I can't wait.
