Going to visit some friends this weekend in Saluda. I am going to fish the Green river for the first time. Any suggestions on location, tackles and tactics? I fly and spin fish, I would love to rip some smallies.

The green is primarily a trout stream all the way to lake Adger so the smallie action will be limited. Along Green Cove Rd there is some public access to the river and the closer you get to Lake Adger, the better you chances of catching a smallie or Largemouth. I've heard that here are smallies and largemouth below lake adger, before it hits the broad, but access seems hard to come by unless you float it. I'd suggest driving to Asheville, renting a canoe from one of the local outfitters and floating a section of the French Broad if you want to get into smallies. Water color has a big effect on the fish in the French Broad, so make sure there's good visibility on the river before going fishing ( i can get you a visual on the river) . let me know if you have any other questions I might be able to answer. Cheers and enjoy you r trip!

X2 on NCClimbers advise. If you are not into float fishing, try wading the lower reaches Cove Creek which enters the nearby Rocky Broad below lake Lure. I crossed it once years ago and it made me drool. I doubt many people fish there. There are some smallish smallies in the Rocky Broad @ the Bat Cave area.

Yep, French Broad. Green River in that area is all but empty of fish. It is a DH trout stream and gets cleaned out in late Spring.

That is some good info, I will have to re-figure out my trip. Getting a float together should not be that hard.
