There’s an old creek & drainage canal not more than a mile from my home that I have always wanted to explore & fish. Well, this morning, I unleashed a pre-dawn creek attack on this small-unfished hole in my backyard…

Figured I probably would only catch some bream or a gar at best! This small time canal really surprised me; on my second cast I caught a halfway decent Kentucky Spotted Bass on a topwater bait. Beginners luck, maybe! I fished this creek until it met up with its river. All in all, I caught eight Spotted Bass & one Large Mouth out of a washtub looking creek…

Didn’t launch into any line busting hawgs, but managed some nice bass within minutes from my home. I might just start checking out some more of these bypassed creeks & drainage canals.

Nice job!!

In college there was a small flow like that near campus that I used to check out. I was pleasantly surprised to catch some pretty decent fish out of there including one smallie that measured at 18". I also found in one of hte deeper oxbows that there were a pod of carp that lived there that were sure a lot of fun on the old 4 wt :)

I have my eyes on a few smaller flows and your post makes me want to check them out sooner rather than later.

These small creeks & drainage canals hold an abundance and variety of fish. Caught at least four different species of bream as well. Also got every claw of my plastic crawfish bitten off on almost every cast...

Here in Mississippi drainage projects turned most of our small creeks into ditches. While I would have loved to have seen them years ago before the dragline came to town, they still hold fish. Where I live there are two creeks that have been chanelized. They are far too small to put a kayak in. I wade these and have caught some very good bass and bream. The creeks run through the two golf courses in town so they get the fertile runoff and there is no fishing presure. This makes for some aggresive well fed fish. Over the years I have fished a number of small creeks and ditches. Some are productive some are not, but a few casts will tell you all you need to know. Look for any obstruction in these creeks, a low head dam, box culvert, or beaver dam will back up water and provide very good habitat. Keep fishing the small waters they have some real suprises

Small waters hold more fish than you think as you have shown. I have some recent small water to picks to upload when finals are over.

Hey Bayou Shoal, I'm from Springfield, but am now living in Shreveport while in medical school. I'm missing the clear water of the north shore. It's 2.5 hrs drive into Arkansas for anything like what you have behind your house. Please keep posting. Great report!

Thanks, only three week left and I'll have some real free time.

I was reading your other recent post regarding the "One that got away." My PB Spotted Bass was a 3lb 4oz fish I caught two springs ago. Whats the biggest you've landed on that water. I know of ppl that caught 4lb+ spotts 10-20 years ago, but you don't hear about that much anymore.
