View Full Version : New Personal Best Largemouth!!!
06-12-2011, 01:34 PM
On April 20, 2006 I caught my first truly big river bass...a 5-10 LM. I felt that taking up kayaking in late 2005 and being able to fish in other states due to my job had a lot to do with it, as well as learning new tricks from guys on net boards like this one. Growing up wading creeks in MS, I just hadn't had access to fish like this. That fish spoiled me though. I figured since it happened so fast, it wouldn't be long before I broke the 6lb...or even 7lb mark. But 5 years later, it still hadn't happened. That is, until yesterday. I was blessed with a fish that blew that personal best completely away by almost 3lb during the Columbus Leg of the RiverBassin tournament trail.
Not only is this my personal best river bass, this is my personal best bass period, eclipsing a couple 7lb lake bass I've caught. This is definitely a PB I don't expect to break any time soon...

She had the head of a 10lb'er and the length of a 7lb'er. Kinda hump-backed, too. Crazy looking fish, but I ain't picky!
She was up in about a foot of water stalking bedding bream in the twilight. She spit up about a 5" bream while I was fighting her. Didn't know what I had until I lipped her because she sucked the buzzbait down without a whole lot of commotion and didn't really fight that hard other than trying to swim up under a rock which she probably got all of half her head under before bottoming out, and the water was still too dark to see in it so I thought I only had a 4 or 5lb'er. Lot of weight, but not a lot of fight.
To keep from missing hooksets, I throw my buzzbait on a M/ML rod, too! I reeled myself to her more than reeling her in! lol One half-hearted jump right in front of me and thankfully the hooks held.
"Whooooooo!!!!" is right! I know I chanted "Oh my God, what a fish!" for the entire time I was measuring/picturing her and for several minutes afterwards.
Then on the very next cast, I got a reality check. :)
