First off I will apologize for the length of this post, but we had a lot to talk about. Smiley and I planned an outing on our favorite flow with our good buddies Ocmulgee Tim and aznflycaster(Scott). We were pumped since the water has been way to high for a while now. It was still almost the highest I have ever fished and quite muddy, but man I am glad we went. We started out with a little misfortune, Scott flipped his yak on a shallow shoal but didn't end up to wet because he had waders on, we all did. The day was a day where we payed for each big fish with some misfortune but it was worth it. I broke my custom seat on a shoal and my new cranking rod, just the tip so its fixable. Scott can tell you about his bad luck.
Water temp was 47 degrees and the air temp was mid fifties and overcast skies. Well, my buddy Scott started early with a 3lb spotted bass on a spinnerbait while waiting for us to finish the shuttle! So I had a feeling that the day would be good. Tim hit a nice spot right off the bat slow rolling a Terry Wolka "shoal bass" spinnerbait. Then Tim and Scott went on one side of a long island and Smiley and I went the other. Smiley was the next to score with a nice spotted bass on a spinnerbait and Tim picked one up also on spinnerbait. The morning started slow for me. Tim then hit a hot streak and picked up three or four in a row on a spinnerbait, including a monster 3lb 6oz spot. His next fish of his hot streak was a largemouth about a pound and a half. Then he hooks up with a toad, possibly 5-6lb largemouth on his spinnerbait, but it came unbuttoned right by his yak.
Man this morning was starting off sweet! Then right after Tim lost that big one, I had my first hit on my Terry Wolka "bull bream" spinnerbait. Was slow rolling it in about 6-8ft of water and the fish pounded it. I knew it was decent before I saw it. Fight didn't last long becausee the fish was cold, was a 3lb 4oz largemouth. The big fish were hungry this morning. Not long after, Smiley hooks her second spot and so does Scott. Both were almost 2lbs. We hit a dry spell for a while, the spinnerbait bite virtualy died, until Scott hooked a nice shoal bass in deep water on one. Almost 2lbs.
Since the water was hauling we took a slower oxbow and Scott lost a nice fish on a shakyhead. I fished all the way to the end, and just before leaving the oxbow I hooked another decent largemouth on my spinnerbait. It was also deep, on a tree. Weighed exactly 2lbs. We stopped for a nice lunch of sandwhiches. No more would be caught on the spinnerbait. Scott was next to pick a couple smaller spots up on his shakyhead with a black trick worm. He seemed to find something the deeper fish wanted because he hooked into a nice one, 3lb 10oz largemouth, was so fat it looked like it was going to explode. A few minutes later he hooked another largemouth we didn't weigh but was almost 3lbs! I had began throwing the shakyhead and got a couple black trick worms from Scott. Smiley started tossing a 1/4oz Terry Wolka jig with a zoom chunk on the back. I had a small fish on, then lost another small one. They were picking the worm up and running towards me so I wasn't sticking them. Smiley scored a nice shoal bass on her jig next. Between 1-2lbs.
Tim was about beat so he decided to paddle on to the take out, and the minute he dissapeared I felt something swimming off with my worm. Reeled up and set the hook, felt tiny. Also didn't feel like I hooked it well so I set the hook again and when the fish came near the surface I could tell it was a dandy shoal bass. 3lb 1oz, long and skinny. I kept fishing the shelf I caught that big shoal bass on and had one grab my worm maybe three casts later, but my braid snapped when I set the hook. Dang. Caught one more small shoal bass and a nice red eye. They sure aren't as pretty as north georgia red eyes, but they're still neat. Tim ended the day with 4 or 5, Scott had 7, Smiley had 3 and I had 5. Was a mix bag as all 4 species in this river were caught and 2 spots over 3lbs, 2 lm over 3lbs and a shoal bass over 3! Not bad for the second week of December.
Smiley and Scott will add their pictures soon! Tim may have more to add since I only have 2 of his 4 fish
