Jeepinitreal asked me to make a post to get a head count for the Georgia-Bama Slam. The camp site location has been approved, but Matt needs a body count for the city counsel. Thanks.

I believe this is the place the rodeo will be held at. If you take a look
at the Lat/Lon settings at the bottom of the photo, you can also pull this
up on Google Earth if you wish to look around. This used to be an airfield
and there is plenty of room to camp next to the river. I believe it is managed
by the city of Valley, Alabama.
The coordinates are:

That's the old Shawmut Airfield and it's no longer in service. It's a clear float from Westpoint Dam to this point and it continues downstream to Langdale Dam. Below that you have one more dam (actually two, but about the same area) at riverview then no more dams till you get to Bartletts Ferry on the far side of Lake Harding, (the "backwaters" here 'bouts). My SILs Father works at Valley recreation dept. so if anything is needed?

The Generation Schedule can be heard daily at (706) 645-2929. There is usually no generation on weekends but I always check. Weekdays vary but you can get an idea of what to expect by checking the schedule in the days leading up. Unless the weather changes radically it stays about the same.

I don't want to butt in if it's not needed, but while talking to the Valley Director of Parks and Recreation, the "Fishing Derby" as she called it came up. She said that we need to sign a rental agreement and pay a $50 fee and a $200 deposit. In addition there are no facilities at this area which would require renting a porta john. There would be no individual fees however. The location is perfect for a weekend fishing trip on the Hooch, about halfway between start and finish with access on site as well as an easy drive to the other access points.
If everyone is in agreement, I will cover the fee and deposit. I would have to check on the cost for a porta john and would ask all to chip in to cover that. I won't do anything until I get a go ahead from the group.
Bruiser
08-26-2010, 08:57 PM
Hooch, that's no problem at all. That's very gracious of you to offer to pay any up front costs. You'll have no problem with the attendees paying you back at the rodeo. Jeepinitreel is heading this rodeo. I'm assuming he has been busy because he hasn't been on the site lately. Just make sure to try to coordinate with him in case he has been doing things behind the scenes that we don't know about. This rodeo will be here before y'all know it!

I PMd Jeepinitreal to see if he had the secret handshake going. waiting for a reply. We still have plenty of time so I'm waiting to hear from him. Trying to fire up some of our locals and not so locals from ARF. We have another get together two weeks after the alaga slam and a clean up in between but I'm hoping that some of the hard core river anglers won't be able to resist. Most don't get a shot at a shoalie that often. I'll try to post up some photos of the areas soon.

Yeah I have been busy working on getting the bike shop where I work and the local bait shop to cover the fee and deposit .the porta potty is takin care of as well . I didn't want to post the location on the thread because last year you had to be logged in to see the map and I don't know how to do that. Also I have been waiting on the stragglers to speak up before I give the parks and rec people a number of campers . The Monday after next I will meet with Laura and handle all. Thanks for the offer to help. But I think we are lookin good right now . Anybody with questions can call me 706 669 3055 I don't have Internet access except on my phone. I only count 4 ARFers on the list so far. We've got a couple of other outings planned but I still hope to see more of the rightsiders (right side of the river facing downstream?) to show up. I swiped some of Mat1583s photos since I'm having problems getting mine uploaded. We took the long float and was literally into dozens of bass. Average of around 2lb. If it looked like it ought to have a fish on it, there was two or three.

I'd like to bring my camper, but I have to be at a job site in Dothan on Monday. I don't want to drive all the way back home, drop the camper off, and drive all the way back to Dothan Sunday night. Ok, so the deposit has been takin care of compliments of Golden,s Bike Shop here in Lagrange ! But the fee is still out. The guys that were going to cover it backed out on me when it came to handing over the dough. Also the fee that we thought was $50 is actualy $50 a night so it's a bill all together I ( and maybe some other locals ) will cover the camp fee but will need to be reimbursed by those of you who will be camping. This sucks I know but it is the cost of being right on the river for this event! I feel that this locatoion is well worth the money.

Looks like it's shaping up nicely. I think this is the first time anyone has had a group like this at the airport. The rec dept is looking at developing it so next year hopefully it'll be even better.
I'm bringing a fire ring so if you have a few sticks of wood, that would be great. I've talked to the porta pot people and we're good to go. It's Auburn Thrones so you Dog and Tide fans will have to tough it out.
I've got a maybe from some of the local ARFers, Matt1593, CoosaRiverCat (some of you may know Roy from the Ga forum), Young Harding, my newest SIL, and Daniel my Veteran SIL. Don't know who if any will be camping.

Hey fellas they are starting to pull the lake down :( . They generated from 1pm until 10 pm today but the river has stayed below 6 feet and that is my safety cut off when doing a float or paddle up . A float down and paddle back up is not really a great idea this time of the year! But I am working with the Army Corps of Engineers to find out if they will be pulling water that weekend and if so then when and how much! It's less than 2 weeks away now ............ L-man, I imaging people will split into some groups and agree on times amongst themselves depending on what float they're doing. I know I'll probably be wanting to get on the water around sun-up.
That is a good question about what we should "sync or watches" to. I was assuming CST since we were staying on the AL side. But I think us CST folks might be outnumbered. :)

I would like to know more about how we are doing the floats. Is someone taking us up river and letting us out and we fish back to camp are whats the deal and how are we doing it. And how long are the floats we are doing.
Reason i am asking is i have some bad back trouble and cant stay in the yak for more then two hours at a time. If i do my lower body gets to hurting so bad i cant stand it. So i will have to stop and get out somewhere along the float. Need to either get me a canoe are one of the new Yak's Drew has out with the high rise setting in it. That way i can stand up some and it wont be so bad. Anyways if someone knows let me know. Thanks

Me and RatherBfishing and Driftingdave plan to roll in about 08:00 or so..Jeep will be there so once we all stake our claim for a camping spot we will hit the river
Either a paddle up or Jeep may have a short float in mind we can do..Come on and join us.
I am so ready to go I cant stand myself :)

GeorgeT, we usually decide the floats Friday and Sat. night while telling stories around the campfire. The person with the most local knowledge will break all the available floats down and we'll form groups based on those floats and what people want to do. Some people may want to do long floats and some people may just want to do a paddle up. Some floats may be able to float a lot of people, whereas some floats may be small or real short and only have room for two. It just really depends. Physical disabilities are certainly taken into consideration when we decide on floats. I'm sure JnR will read your post and chime in with a recommendation for you. If you aren't going to be there Friday night then I will make sure we include your name in the float discussion so you won't be left out.
WJ, you aren't allowed to fish the torpedo on Friday. Save some fish for the rest of us.

Yeah man I have a perfect spot for you George t :) and bruiser I will try to keep WJ from catching all the fish but keep in mind it's a big river with ample room for all and alot of float options! I'm planing on doing one of my secret creek floats on Sunday with room for maybe 3 other people so grab dibs if you want in!!!!!!! Work is gonna drag tomorrow for me !! How about y'all?

Don't worry man. Jeepinitreal and I know the area fairly well. There are plenty of "stops" along the way if you do a long float. If you have any questions shoot me a pm.

Getting psyched about this! Unforturnately, work threw me a curveball, so I can't get there Friday morning like I hoped, but should still roll in around dusk. Anybody bringing firewood? I got a bunch of logs from a dead pine I had to cut down in the back yard. I'm planning on bringing that, but I don't have much for kindling.

That gives me a great idea. It looks like I'm stopping by the store tomorrow to buy a kite. :) I haven't flown one in years and even then I didn't know what I was doing.

I haven't flown one in years and even then I didn't know what I was doing. Use a swivel and tie it to a rod, preferable braid as it is, after all, just kite string.

Guys if we are going to do some short runs up and back i am good with that. I can paddle up and come back to camp with out any trouble. I did not know if someone was taking us up and dropping us off and we had a 6-8 hour float on hand. Anyways me and Craig will be there some time sat morning we want be camping so it will just be a sat outing for us. Look forward to meeting you all then.
Red Heron, JnR, and any others--I've got the firewood covered. My house is about 3 miles from the campsite and I will bring the wood. It's dry, seasoned, oak and some hickory. No need for anyone else to bring any.
George T and Craig-Ga---We've got you covered on the shuttle. We'll work it out when you get there. Just come and have a good time with us.
Call me when you get to I-85 and I will meet you at the airport site. My cell phone is 706 773-6202.

Can you say "aerial photography"? :D
Fly, I already have some wood loaded up, so I'm not unloading it now. I need to get rid of it...besides, it's only about 1/8 cord of dry/dead pine, so it'll probably burn fast anyway.

Hey Fly thanks for the offer to shuttle us up the river. But I think I am just going to paddle up and back down. That way when I start to feel give out I will know it is time to turn around and head back. I hope Drew comes with the new Yak I want to try it out and see if I like the way is sets. I think if I could get set up in a chair type set like his new yak has I would stop a lot of my trouble with my back hurting so much.
And for the most part I am looking forward to meeting all you guys. so I am sure there is going to be a lot of talking going on at the camp site. Cant wait it is about to drive me nuts to get there. seeya all then.
