Jason and myself had the pleasure to fish with paw paw and tyga yesturday on one of our favorite floats. This was my 1st time fishing with Robert, and my 2nd with paw paw! It was a day I will not soon forget. We started out on the river at sunrise about 7. It as my 1st time taking out my tricked out yak. Jason got me for my bday 2 rod holders, a new anchor system, a new baitcaster(so no I'm using 2 and a spinning rod), a net, some new lures to try, and a new fishing phanny pack, all of which I almost lost..... But ill get to that later.
Robert started with the 1st fish of the day. A nice spot. Jason ended up with the 2nd one. Robert caught another one and then Jason hooked into a good one. It was near some rocks, and it jumped like 3 or 4 times. We thought for sure it was a good shoalie, but turned out to be a 3lb largemouth. NICE!
Then it was my turn. I had to stop on the bank for nature called. I made the mistake of getting out of my yak barefoot, and busted my butt! And brused my foot on a rock. Jason, paw paw, and Robert were a little ways down river. I was fishing some wood, and wham I get a hard hit. I was using my new baitcaster, with a new lure that I've never used before. A pig and jig( black and blue, with a purple spotted trailer). I was swimming it right off the bottom next to a fallen tree. I got a big hit and set the hook hard( both Jason and paw paw told me how important it was to set the hook fast and hard on the pig and jig). Anyways he gave me a great fight! My drag was too loose so I tightened it up. He kept making runs trying to get back under that log. I got up to the top and I netted him and let out a couple yells! Buddy I was EXCITED! :D That was my 1st big fish I've landed all by myself. Jason usually has to help with the big ones. So you can only imagine the rush I felt. I have to paddle down stream a ways to show the guys. Took pictures and Jason weighed it. Largemouth 2 lbs 11 oz. Not too bad for my 1st fish of the day, and my 1st fish on the pig and jig. Let's just say, I fished that lure all day! :)
Paw paw had a couple quick releases, and Robert caught a few more. I was throwing at another piece of wood and I hooked into a decent spot. It was about a lb, I didn't weigh it. But he gave up a pretty good fight. My next fish was a 1/2 lb spot.
Paw paw catches the next big one. We had made our way through some shoals and were fishing the bottom. When we hear paw paw say, fish on, and its a good one. Gave him a good fight. Nice shoal bass of 3lbs 6oz! Way to go paw paw!!!
Now, in this same area I hook into a nice one. I was throwing next to a rock shelf and wham. I get a nice hit, set the hook hard, and the fight was one! He pulled drag, and gave me a run for the money. He came out of the water once and I hear Robert yell, get em girl, that's a nice one. But, I got my net out and tried to give it to Robert cuz I just couldn't get him close enough. Well, he took a run towards me and that was my chance. Got him in the net, and in the yak. Jason came and took some pictures, and weighed him for me. 2lbs 14oz! Almost 3lbs!!! YEAH BUDDY!! :) needless the say I was stoked!! This was my 4th fish and the day was still young! Me and paw paw caught those 2 in the same area which was cool.
We went through an oxbo, and paw paw hooked into a nice one on his j13, but he got off. I hate when you loose a good one. We got out a little ways down and wade fished with our yaks tied to us. I caught 2 small shoalies there.
We stoped on some rocks and ate lunch and told our stories of the fish we've caught so far. By this time I was up to 6. Which is really good for me! We head on down and both paw paw and Jason hook into one each, right after we take off. Robert heads down the other side of the island. I thought I heard fish on, but paw paw said it wasn't him. Well, I few minutes later Robert comes around the corner and said fish on! Of course he already had it landed and came to show us! Nice largemouth 3lbs 6oz! Awesome! We all had caught a decent fish!!
I caught another small shoalie. Jason is fishing some shoals and he hooks into a shoalie. It gave him a fight. Kept trying to make runs. Got him up and It was a nice 2lb 6oz shoalie! Way to go! That was his 2nd good size one for the day.
Well, what happens next was INSANE! I started going down this spot where the water runs over a tree. I go this way every time, and I've never had a problem with it. The water must have been lower than I'm used to and when I head over the tree my yak gets stuck on the edge, and turns me size ways and some how flips me, and pins me and my yak against the tree with the water raging! I yell for Jasons help. My yak is full of water, I'm holding on to my yak for dear life, cuz the water is trying to drag me under the tree, and under my yak. I've got my paddle in one hand, my rod that not in my holder in the mouth, and I'm just holding on. Jason gets to me and starts to pull me and the yak. He gets me away from the tree, but the water was moving so fast it was hard to get out. A j11 is stuck to my shoe from one of my rods, not even sure how that happened. And my yak is carrying Jason down stream. I try to go help Jason pull my yak to the rocks near by. Paw paw and Robert come to help and grab stuff thats floating by them in the process. Thanks to my boys we saved pretty much everything! The only thing I lost was the thing that locks my rod into place on one of my rod holders. I got a few bruses and a hurt wrist. Jason got a couple bad scratches. But he ended up saving me!!! He reacted fast to help pull me free. I was so freaked out, that I didn't ride much of the rapids for the rest of the day. I poraged most of them. Not sure if ill be trying to go over trees anymore.
After that It took me a few minutes to catch my breath but that didn't stop me from fishing! I ended up catching 3 more, one being a largemouth over a pound. And 2 small shoalies. I used that pig and jig all day, and caught all of my fish on it. 10 total. No bream this time! :) Jason ended with 14 landed and 2 quick releases, Robert ended up with 17, and I'm not sure how many paw paw caught. But his numbers were up there too! So we had over 55 maybe 60 fish between the 4 of us! It was a great day on the river! I'm VERY sore today! And I'm more brused up than I thought, but we still had a blast!!! :) its always a good time when you're fishing with great people!! I will definitely not forget the day we had. Pictures to come soon. Happy fishing!!
