Well, of cousre Smiley and I has today free, so yesterday I called up Paw Paw to talk about that shoalie I caught yesterday, when he suprised me and said he would float w/ us on our favorite haunt! So we were like an hr late meering Paw Paw, sorry bout that, but got on the water by 7:30 or so. Water was high and fast! I was 1st to score w/ a 1.5lb shoalie on my rapala J-11 black/gold. Then I caught a couple small spots under a lb. Smiley was next to take a good 1.5lb shoalie. Then I caught a couple small LM and spots, one more shoalie about the size as 1st one. Smiley caught a pound spotted bass next. All these are on J-11's of course. The morning started slow for Paw Paw, but he would make up for that later...trust me. I had a nice little streak and caught like 5 or 6 before Paw Paw finally gets on the board w/ the biggest shoalie so far close to 2lbs. He then has one around 5 or 6 lbs follow his J-13 to the boat, kiss it and leave. He was trying to get Smiley in position to catch a big one when I have a LM maybe 4 or 5lbs do the same thing to me but not touch my lure, just followed. While I'm yelling to the others that I had a big follow I am throwing back to the tree it came out of when BAM, a big fish on! I think it's that LM so I yell out "I got him!" The fish bulldogs for deaper water and then heads straight at me. Oh yeah, the splash after I set the hook was massive...yet another reason I thought it was that big LM. To my pleasant suprise it turns sideways and I realize it's a pretty big shoalie, not that LM. I tell Paw Paw it's probably 2-3lbs as I am fighting it. Landed it without to much trouble, still a real hard fight but went smooth. 2lb 10oz! I made a good guess for underwater view. We all went on a streak were we were catching pound to pound and a half fish of mixed species. We hit a section of slacker water w/ good laydown wood along the shore, I was downstream fishing some rocks when I look upstream and hear Smiley yell fish on! She was using her brand new baitcaster w/ 6'3" medium heavy rod and it was doubled over. (Side note, she has only been fishing a baitcaster since Macon tourney and is doing great.) Well I think she has a gar on b/c she is getting pulled downriver prettyy faat. She is yelling for help so I haul butt to her, speaking of hauling, my new yak is FAST! When I get to her I still can't see the fish. Then all the sudden abeast emerges from deep and it looks like a 6lb LM! Only hooked with one hook of one treble! Not cool b/c this was Smilies biggest bass ever for by far. She plays it out like a champ and it bellies up for me, and I take the chance and lip it quick. Smiley and I let out simultaneous yells and Paw Paw came hauling over. 4lbs 5oz largemouth!!!! Tim we told you we would catch a big one and name it after you since you couldn't fish(stole the idea drom Paw Paw). Well, there is now a 4lb 5oz largemouth named Tim......if you guys catch him, tell him hi for us. Smiley and I wore both freaking, I was so proud of her. Watch out fellows at the next tournament or she'll be taking home some trailer or something. :) we head down and here is were Paw Paw began to make up for his slower morning. But it didn't come without a price. I see him fighting a good fish so I head to take a photo when I hear a very calm and quiet Paw Paw say,"I have a hook in my hand....Jason, I have a hooook in my hand." When I get beside hime I see a spotted bass over 2lbs pinned to a J-13 which is also pinned to Paw Paw's finger.....to the bone! I was almost sick...seriously was easier to take the hook out my own leg than do what he had in store for me. He tells me I am taking this hook out his finger! What!!!????!!!!
First things first, I take my pliers and get the spot unhooked, which was tuff since it was pinned to a finger. Paw Paw sticks the fish on his orange clip for later photos and pulls out mini-bolt cutters. He snips the hooks and leaves the one piece long that's in his finger. He rigs up a rope and strings it around the hook and tells me to yank....yank real hard: So I grit my teethe even though I am in no pain and snatch...the hook flys out and Paw Paw barely flinches. Man, those are big hooks on a J-13. Well the spot was huge! Over 2lbs...he didn't weigh it but that was our 3rd species and 3rd big fish...one for each of us. We were very pleased with the turnout....Smiley had 6 w/ big fish honors, Paw Paw can tell ya'll how many he caught but I know it was over 10. I ended with 20. A very mixed bag for everyone. I recomend everyone get a set of those mini boltcutters...they saved Paw Paw's life...cut those hooks like butter. Smiley used that baitcaster like a pro and I was super stoked that she caught such a huge bass! Fun times.
