It's about time to start the planning. Big 2 questions are when and where...and that may depend on how many.

Might be a good idea to have site A and site B in case of weather and water conditions.

Anybody have some bright ideas?

I sort of lean to another shot at the Edisto but don't really care.
BasserDrew
02-02-2010, 10:17 PM
I like trying the Edisto since we already had that plan down and that way we could do it earlier which would mean we get to A.) Have it earlier and B.) possibly have another one later on in the year somewhere else!

I\'ll leave this up to the majority and the SC state reps and members to figure out and plan. I look forward to it wherever and whenever it is!

As a new "Lowcountry" resident I am all for the Edisto. But it is VERY high right now and we have more wet weather coming. I will definitely defer to Stump's expertise but it may be awhile before she's fishable.

The Edisto is going to stay high during the spring months because there are no dams on it to regulate the water flow. The water levels should start dropping as the monsoons subside and the weather warms.

Does anyone have an extra boat? I am coming(flying) to this one!

They'll definitely be an extra boat for you if you can fly out to this one!

Cole, hope you can make it. Several of us have extra boats so don't worry about that. Heck, I got extra tent and other stuff. Just get yourself over here. Look forward to meeting you!

Unfortunately Bruiser is right. Even IF the weather patterns return to normal now, the Edisto won't get right again until the vegetation starts putting on leaves. It'll probably be at least May, and that would conflict with the tournament trail.

I suggest trying something in the midlands for the spring and then maybe an Edisto trip in the fall.

TRW, if I can ever wrap up here in Mobile we'll hit the river. Flooded or not. Even with the high water my buddies are catching striper and crappie. I'll keep you posted.

I'll be leaving this up to Boyscout, Stumphumper and Bruiser to make a call on and I'm fine with whatever you guys decide on. I'll come if I can but I would just avoid the weekend of May 1 and May 22nd due to other site events that will conflict at that time. More on those later.

I appreciate what you guys do to make these rodeos happen for the site. They truly are some of the best times I've ever had.

Either works for me. By then we may be able to pull off one on the Edisto if that is still the preference Its on a pretty good fall now, and by then the trees should be helping the cause. Lowcountry or midlands matters not to me. we could always plan for the Edisto and have a back up plan for the midlands.

Lets go ahead and have the rodeo on the Edisto River for the weekend of April 16-18. I think everyone here is excited to fish the Edisto so let's make that happen. Those dates will also give us a little bit of a cushion from Easter weekend.

We'll need a head count to reserve campsites so please reply here if you plan on attending.

Reservations for the campsite will be made tomorrow. We will be reserving four sites. According to Stumphumper, the campsites are large so four sites should give us sufficient room. They also have a fairly large open area that we should be able to use if we don\'t have enough room at the sites. The only bad part about the open area is that it is away from the river and bathrooms (which may be a good thing….those that attended the North Carolina Rodeo know what I mean). So don\'t be afraid to load up the boat at the last minute and join us for some fun! We\'ll be able to make room for you, even if you didn\'t respond to this thread! The more the merrier!

Boyscout, great back up plan! Anyone have any questions?

BTW, I talked with Stumphumper tonight and he heard from a reliable source that the Edisto is looking pretty good right now. It\'s looking good for the rodeo!

It is that time again for another River Bassin Rodeo. This time it will be the First Annual Lowcountry Springfest, where Riverbassin.com members will gather for good food, fishing, and fellowship.
What: The Lowcountry Springfest will be a fishing and camping excursion for registered forum members of this site and their guests. To become a member simply register for free on the Riverbassin forums.
Who Can Attend: Members and friends of RiverBassin.com. Although Springfest will take place in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, all members of the site and their guests are welcome and encouraged to attend.
When: The Lowcountry Springfest will take place the weekend of April 16-18. We will be camping Friday and Saturday night. We understand that everyone may not be able stay the whole weekend. Please feel free to come and go at any time. The purpose of this Riverbassin Rodeo is to get members of this site together to unwind from the wintertime blues and enjoy some good fishing, good times, and good food. So come on and join us and feel free to bring others that might enjoy the Lowcountry Springfest.
Where: On the banks of the beautiful Edisto River at Colleton State Park (http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/park-finder/state-park/1876.aspx). The park is located 11 miles north of Walterboro and 48 miles northwest of Charleston, S.C.

Lowcountry Springfest Waters: Our location will give us access to many good floats on the main stem of the Edisto River, approximately 70 river miles worth. So we will be able to accommodate a large group. Overcrowding on the river will not be an issue.
Camping: We will reserve as many improved campsites as we need: picnic tables, fire rings, running water, and electricity. The restroom facilities are well kept, heated, and have hot water. There are a limited number of sites suitable for campers up to 40′. If you would like one of these please let us know ASAP!
Cost: $10-15 for tent camping. Reservations and payment has already been made. Please contact Bruiser for more information.
Supplies: There is a small country store 1 mile from the park. A Wal-Mart and other major grocery chains are in Walterboro 11 miles to the south.
Please follow the Lowcountry Springfest thread on the forum to see who is bringing what and how you can pitch in.
What YOU need to do: Please announce your plans to attend on this thread and whether or not you plan to bring any guests. The sooner you let us know the better the chance of everyone being on adjoining camp sites!
Please remember to be on your best behavior. It is VERY important that Riverbassin maintains a good relationship with the state park. We want to be good stewards of our sport and represent Riverbassin well! This is ESSENTIAL in order to preserve the future of our sport!
See you at the Lowcountry Springfest!

I am planning to be there Friday too. Maybe I can find a short float so I can get to camp early enough to set up tent in daylight.
Only thing worse than setting up camp in the dark is setting up camp in the dark and it's raining and you are in the wrong place on private property and the land owner is pointing a shotgun at your belly...take that back, the worse is dealing with the IRS or DMV.
Oh yeah, speaking of floats, here is a good website with access points on the Edisto: http://www.edistofriends.org/edisto_access.htm
I advise everyone to do thier homework on the access sites so that when we plan floats around the camp fire, we all have a decent idea of where everything is. Might save someone a bad day. Nothing worse than spending half your fishing day driving down roads while lost. Yeah, even worse than setting up camp in the dark...while it's raining!
I am so pumped about this trip, I am getting the shakes. I will have to see my therapist 3 times a week till April 16th!

I think Cole has started something with his name change. Got me to thinking about changing mine to HeapingPileOfBS...
waderjon, I usually bring enough to feed me and then a little extra but if we can talk LilPeeDee into bringing some of his awesome deer sausage, we got it whupped! Same trip, Tar Devil brought some massive deer steaks. I ate so much, I hurt myself.
I usually bring some extra Johnsonville Jalapena and Chedder brats which go great with everything. Over the past couple of years, I started bringing roast beef sliced thin with some provolone cheese and whole wheat bread for breakfast. In the morning, fishing time is wasting so usually eat the sandwich which is made the night before and consumed in about 2 minutes with no cooking and cleanup required. Discovered that trick down in the Glades with RedfishGuide cause you drive 15 hours to fish, you don't waste any daylight cooking breakfast!
BTW, I'll bring 1 extra 2 man tent, 2 gas double burner stoves, 1 single burner stove (great for coffee), 1 extra cot and sleeping pads, 2 electric lanterns, 4 camp chairs, 1 frying pan, various cooking utinsels, plastic cups, and various other eating related stuff. Oh yeah, I'll bring the kitchen sink too!
I wasn't pegged Boyscout for nothing.

Crossed both forks on I-20 today on my way to ATL and thought about this event. Also saw deepstep and rockstar for a short visit and they are getting excited and were telling me about all this food their bringing and how it is going to be an insane feast!

Hey Bruiser! Is it possible to join in at this late date? I had a great time last year at Uwharrie in spite of the camp site :) I would probably arrive Friday evening and fish Saturday only. Depending on weather, I'll probably leave some time Sunday.
It's almost here!

Come on down Catawba! It'll be great to have you!
It looks like we'll have a pretty good crowd. We may contact the park to see if we can use their primitive camping field as well as the spots we have already reserved so we can have plenty of room for everyone.
What do you think Stump? The sites we have reserved borders the primitive camping area. Do you think they'll allow us to use the primitive area on such short notice?

Who is going to be there early? I was planning to come down thursday night after work, although it'll be pretty late. I remember somebody saying they were setting up camp around monday or tuesday. Also, whats the deal with the grocery list?
Stump
04-09-2010, 09:16 AM
Bruiser- I don't think they will have any issue with that as long as it is not already reserved. I have to go to Aiken later today, and will try to stop by and speak with the ranger. They also have a recreation building that they let camping clubs use. I'll check and see if we can use it also.
deadeyedupre- I plan to set up camp on Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest. Come on down whenever you are ready.

Thanks Bruiser!
I don't mind reserving a separate site for myself if necessary and possible at this point. I have never been to this park so I'll go with your recommendation.

Catawba, you should be fine. If we need to add a site or two I'll be there by Wednesday at the latest and can take care of it.

Come on Jack. My plan is to do a long float Wed. and Thurs. to mark the hard to spot take outs. I'll probably be doing more floating than fishing those two days, but you're welcome to join me.

I'm still in. be there Friday late afternoon.
BTW, I have created a few float plans for floats upstream and downstream of the park.
Stump, if get a chance, can you look these over and see if I made any errors? Also, is there a public landing at Springtown?

BS- Those look good. We call the GPCL Landing Big Foots House (anyone launching there will see why), and the Springtown landing is private ($10 I think). I'm putting together some maps also that will break up some of these floats using some of my private accesses.
Catawba- We can make several floats work for you. I'll have at the minimum, one jon boat with electric motor and a Riverhawk with a 15hp with me for anyone to use.
One word of caution. The floats between Givhans Ferry SP and Jellico will be a little sketchy this weekend. The warmer temps have started bringing out the local "wildlife". In particular, Good Hope and Jellico's will be a little rough.

BTW- Things are shaping up nicely for this weekend. The river has dropped to a good level with no rain in the forecast. The water is getting warmer and clearer by the day. Temps are supposed to be in the low 80's. For those that are interested, the bream and crappie are really starting to pop!

Rodeo Insider
* Watch out for the "pie plate " wasp nests... trust me, you would rather have a moccasin in the boat.
*You will need some sort of anchoring system. Drag chain or whatever. Remember we don't have shoals and pools, so it will be a steady 2-3 mph with very little to break the current.
*The top water bite is picking up, but the bigger bass are coming on jigs, plastics, Spinnerbaits, and swim baits.
*Trophy flathead cats (60-80 lbs) are being caught pretty regular. If anyone is interested bring a heavy rod and some circle hooks. We can fish for them from the bank in the evenings with live bream.
**** Technically alcohol is prohibited in the SP, but the ranger said they do not enforce that rule as long as we don't flaunt it.

Looks like we got a great group its gonna be a ton of fun! Yes, the meal on sat eve/night will be prepared by me and rocky served lowcountry style poured out on picnic tables covered in newspaper, I am bringing cocktail and tartar sauce, butter, and some cajun shake if you like xtra heat. If you have an allergy to shellfish, you will not be able to eat anything I fix due to the contents being all boiled together. If you have never had lowcountry boil, you r in for a real treat. The meal will consist of red potatoes, corn on the cob, georgia boy smoked sausage, a few yella onions and a few lemons, and of course 14lbs of med shrimp, all boiled in my fav seasoning ( dont ask I won't tell ya about my trade secrets, or my fishin holes) j/k its boiled in zatarans pro boil which is good and spicy. If you feel for health or allergy reasons you cannot or shouldnt eat any of this rest assured you will not hurt my feelings or anyone elses as we will enjoy your share without complaint!!!! Seriously though, I dont have a plan B for those who may have allergies or health concerns so make sure to bring something and if you r no chef then we will be glad to help you throw it on the grill! There is no catch here, this is my gift to my fellow hard working americans and esp river bassers. things are tough all over right now, this is my attempt in a small way to gather on the river, enjoy good food and fellowship, and forget that for a while. Thanks to all the state reps who have and are currently helping to bring this event together!!!! You guys have done an awesome job!
Ps...sounds like there r plenty of wasps out so if you r allergic pack your epi pen please! Rocky and I are both trained and certified nurse anesthetists and will have a simple first aid kit on hand, jeff

Guys, I am going to have to back out. My wife is having to make an emergency family trip to Virginia this weekend and I have child duty. I know you all will have a great time and hopefully I will be able to make another tirp sometime. The river is really getting into good shape, so hopefully the fish will cooperate.
