I was finally able to get on the water for the first time since last OCT. Really all I can say about that is UGH!! Its been about 2 weeks and Im just now getting this on here. I was up and on the road for a 4 1/2hr drive. I was picking up a another kayak in northern part of VA. while I was up there hit a small unnamed river.

I could tell its been several months since I had been on a yak. I was dropping things, couldnt get comfortable, and making way to much noise but the fish didnt seem to mind as 15mins after being on the water. I had my first fish of 2010 a 12″ spotted bass! It was a mixed bag of spott's and largemouth. The fishing was great!! I caught a bunch of fish on hair jigs,jig-n-pig, and senko's with the biggest of the day being a heathy 16.25″er that hit a slow dragged jig-n-pig. I should have caught alot more fish than I did. My feet got cold and that is why I called it a day an paddled on out.

Nice!! Good to see the spot biting this time of year. I'd have take a 2 hour drive south to find one though...that is if I could get out of my driveway.

nice job Tony!

I wont be hitting the water for awhile unless I take a long drive it seems. Everywhere around here is busting the banks and will be for quite some time.

Hersch you looking forward to the next 5 inches coming tomorrow?

WTG, Tony. Here\'s an account of my first, and I kinda feel guilty about the way it happened. I went to my camper the middle of January to check to make sure everything was sound. Pretty much was. I took my sparkelybait stuff, sat on my porch and twisted up a few. Walked down to the river and saw all this slack water, eddie cuts, despite the river being about 8 feet too high. Went back to the truck, just happened to have my spinnerbait rod, grabbed two big black blades and headed back.

I slow-rolled everywhere I could, but this one area kept bringing me back. A huge sycamore was creating a nice slick and I knew there was a large piece of concrete beside the tree that had to be causing the current to stop.

The sparkelybait was a single #8 Colorado, all black. I sat the hook on a lot of grass and debris during this time. At one point he blade stopped turning, some resistance, and I went to set the hook on what I figured was more grass. I only had about 6 or 7 feet of line out with the bait about a foot from shore. I laid on it and a pretty dang nice smallie came flying towards me. Just like that, I had a smallie flopping around in the grass. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting anything, no camera, no tape, nothing. So I grabbed two twigs, laid the bass out, and put a twig at the head and tail. I released the fish, went to the truck, got my tape and measured a conservative 18.5”. I got me a smallie on a sparkelybaits in January from a flow that three days ago was covered in ice. I’m right tickled with this one!

Hey NR RAT I would trade quanity for quality anyday. Congrats on a great smallie and I enjoyed reading your report. Welcome to the site and you should fit in just fine on this site. Those sparkelybait's that you like so much are what most of the guys on this site call there go to bait.

Im off next week so I hope to make it to a few winter holes to try and catch a smallie or two. Sometimes Ill wear a latex glove under my fingerless gloves. You can put vasoline (sp) on then the latex and it helps keep your fingers warm.

Tony, I was serious the last time we talked on the phone. The walleye hole I told you about is an easy drive from your house and you could leave the yak at home and just bank fish there. You'll need some heavier football jigs or dropshot rigs because of the tailrace, but the fish are stacked in there this time of year. Do what you want to, but if you go up there, I'd bring a tub of nightcrawlers and some grubs...a spoon wouldn't hurt either

The road leading down to the dam is likely to be maintained because of the power plant so it should be easy to make in your car.

If I lived as close to it as you do, I'd be there everyday I had off. These are a stocked fish so I'd also bring a stringer. Let's face it, fried walleye=yummmmmmmmmmmmmmm
