View Full Version : Which do you prefer (Baits)

Since we had such a good response to the baitcasting vs spinning reel thread, I thought I would post another one. I did some search's and found nothing that came close, so when times are tough ,what bait do you reach for as your last resort.

For me it's crankbaits, I have a lot of confidence in my ability with them, as I'm sure all of you do, with the bait you will select. Please tell us about your selection….

Well I think confidence is the biggest factor in baits. For me it is spinnerbaits and buzzbaits, then plastics. Cranksbaits for me is a no go, but then again I hate anything that has a treble hook on it. I have been fishing the last two years treble hook free, can't stand them..

Until just recently, it was plastic baits. Now it is my friend "The Spinnerbait" and plastic worms or crawfish. I love topwater baits and will exclusively fish them when the topwater bite is on!!

I used to have treble hook fear, until I started making myself fish them. For me the best crank on the market is the Rat-L-Trap. There used to be a place that sold a green w/ gold back that would out fish any lure I had, the owner used to special order them from Bill Lewis Lures, sadly he has gone out of business.

12-14 inch gizzard shad is my go to bait...

I'm a real simple angler. I fish #1 flukes, #2 tubes, #3 spinnerbaits, in that order under normal conditions.

If the conditions are tough after a cold front, I throw tubes almost exclusively. If the water is muddy, I go to spinnerbaits on the slowroll or yo-yo'ed.

Rattle traps are a favorite of mine in winter time slack water areas. Once again, slowrolled or yo-yo'ed.

I just started tying my own hairjigs this year and will be trying them out on Monday in a small unnammed Va river...if the clarity is decent.

Depending on the water temps, buzzbait or spinnerbait. Of course, I\'ll try everything in my box first, but if they\'re just not biting, that\'s what I\'ll throw, all day long. It\'s paid off on some slow days too, usually with a big fish.

Hmmmm...last resorts....Warm water, I usually go with the buzzbait. Cool water is usually a spinnerbait, sometimes a crankbait depending on the water. Cold water is usually equal parts jig-n-pig/plastics and slow-rolled spinnerbait.

My favorite baits are the 12" notch-back and the RedMan dipped gummie worms! Of course my friend "the spinnerbait" has got to be in there too!

I use to fish just certain ones and I still have my go-to's but the more I learn about each technique I have learned when they are most effective. I feel it is important to learn each technique because when the conditions/water call for it you have it in your bag of tricks to pull out.

Everyone should learn a topwater plug that walks the dog or spits water, a buzzbait, spinnerbait, finesse jig-n-pig, power jig-n-pig for flipping (1/2oz & up), soft plastic finesse, plastic power (1/2oz & up) for flipping, weightless plastics, swimbaits, hard jerkbaits and crankbaits, chatterbaits.

If you can get all those down and learn when they are best then, son, your odds just went up on catching them because you got all the tools in the toolbox to use for the job!!

One way to learn them is to use a new one when the bite is ON and learn the feel of the bite. Be sure and learn about the proper rod, reel and line setup for each because you're not going to be catching any fish flipping in heavy cover with a medium light spinning rod with 10lb test and a 1/2oz jig. Those tools just don't go together…

I still love a spinnerbait thump, a buzzbait blowup and a swimbait inhale as some of my favorite strikes though.

last resort for me are jig-n-pig and weightless plastic (such as stinkos). Last resort in the sense, I'll throw everything else in tackle box first.

Both are fine lures but I just don't like using them. Stinkos, I get bored, and for me it tends to be a numbers bait, not a size bait.

JNP on the other hand can be a size bait. However I mostly fish sitting down in kayak or canoe, while drifting. It just doesn't present the lure well. Also my JNP rod really can't be used for any other river presentation, IMO. I try and limit myself to "just" 4 rods in the kayak and 7 or so in the canoe. This is one of the rods that get culled first. Get me on a reservoir and powerboat with standing deck, and it one of the first presentations I will be going after.

Love the spinnerbait thump my self! My favorite\'s are the small Stanley wedges
in orange/green. We have lot\'s of baitfish in my area that are the same color.
With my ultra-light I can\'t beat white flukes or 4 inch curlytail grubs on a 1/16 jighead.
Senko\'s are fun too rigged weightless.

Mine used to be the spinnerbait, but I have gotten away from them within the last couple of years. Mainly because of the soft swimbaits that I discovered around that same time period. They are DEADLY in the clear shallow waters of the Brazos. But honestly, I need to get back to the spinnerbait this year. They are deadly in their own right.

My favorite bait to throw when times are tough is the fluke. They are extremely versatile and their effectiveness is well documented. I normally fish mine within a 1\' of the surface, and this may sound silly, but I like to watch the action it has in the water. Because it looks so cool to me as I work it back to the yak, I think this helps me keep my confidence up when the bite is tough.
