I'm not sure which one of my baits to blame for this encounter this past Saturday…….the "spinnerbait" or my "Secret Weapon".

Hey Terry...they're in there! An excerpt from my fishing journal...

Too close for comfort

Now, I'm generally not scared of anything...as long as I think I'm in control of the situation. But it seems to happen every summer. I have a close encounter against my will with some large or otherwise potentially dangerous or scary critter...maybe it's God's way of reminding me who's really in control.

The first one I can remember was three years ago when I unwittingly cornered a gigantic (25” probably) grinnel between a huge cypress stump and shallow water while wading a cypress swamp (in retrospect, probably not the smartest thing to do). Two years ago was a 4’ longnose gar that decided that the space between my legs created a perfect place to take a nap. Last year was the curious 6’ bull shark on the FL flats that helped me prove that a man can, in fact, walk on water. Noticing the upward trend in critter size, I was getting kind worried about this summer’s encounter.

Well it happened last week. SSF and I were doing a float in South GA last Saturday. It was a bit of an urban float, so I was completely unsuspecting of what was about to happen. A mile or two into the float, SSF makes a comment that he sees something swimming across the river probably 200 yds downstream. I look and see nothing…contributing the sighting to either the heat getting to him or the lack of fish activity is allowing his mind to wander and his imagination get the better of him. We continue on, and I forget about the comment.

About 200 yds later, I’m pounding a really fishy looking laydown in deep water. SSF was fishing a bit faster and was probably another 200 yds downstream from me. As I made a cast, I caught some movement in my peripheral vision to my right. The gar were about the only thing moving about that day, so I figured it was just a big one surfacing to take a breath. I reeled in my lure and turned to look in the direction of the disturbance. Lying parallel to my little 9’ Pelican Viper less than 3’ away was a very large dark object just under the surface. In a split second, I ran through an entire mental list of creatures…gar, sturgeon, hippopotamus, Nessy…the next split second, the creature simultaneously emerged, realized I wasn’t what he was looking for, and bolted like mad with an enormously loud splash like somebody dropped a couple bowling balls from the bank above. I found it incredibly easy to scream expletives, even with my heart in my throat, as the wake almost turned me over. Somewhat regaining my composure (yeah right), I turned and began paddling frantically downstream towards SSF, mistaking him as an image of my mommy. As the adrenaline began to subside, I turned and looked back upstream, still unsure of what just happened. What I saw answered everything…the head of an alligator about 2ft from nose to neck swimming across the river. I’m guessing between 8 and 10 ft total length.

I got down to SSF, and through short and shallow breathes, informed him of the identity of his mystery river swimmer and the circumstances under which I discovered this information. He had a good laugh…I was already worrying about what next summer’s close encounter is gonna be.

Lance, wow!!!! Thanks for sharing that read from your journal. However, it would have been better if you would have posted it next Wednesday 'after' my trip to the Flint! Now, because of you, I will probably wet the bed the rest of the week and wake up screaming "Gator, Gator," in Susanne's ear while sucking my thumb!

One good thing though; now, I can say I know three persons who have walked on water---Jesus, Apostle Peter and RedHeron!!

If it's of any comfort, I doubt you'll see any up where I *think* you'll be going. That little episode happened down in south GA. I've paddled amongst gators many times without a problem (other than being startled!)...a little surprised none of us MS guys have run into one on the Chick or Leaf yet. I've seen a couple big'uns on the Pearl.

I've seen two gators now on the Pascagoula tribs. I spooked about a 6-7 footer on one trib, or I should say he spooked me. Didn't see him on a log and I was floating backwards and when I got too close he dove in with immense splash. I watched him sink under the water in what was a pretty tiny section of the creek, but it was fairly deep. I waited and waited for him to come back up and never saw him again. I had to have floated right over the top of him because the creek in this area was only maybe 20 yards wide at the most. On another river I also had a little 4 footer follow me all over the place chasing my buzzbait all the way to the side of the kayak. I literally could've reached down and picked him up. He was all cute and cuddly now, but that gator's gonna be a problem when he gets bigger. He had no fear of me at all.

I've actually made a point to paddle directly towards smaller gators for that very reason. Don't know if they have a memory, but maybe if they have to run from a kayak as a small gator, maybe they'll run from them as a big gator, too.

I saw a 10-12 footer on the Chick, but that was 20 years ago. The feeder creeks are getting very populated with them. Last week I ran into a game warden friend of mine at Wal-Mart and he said the two highest gator populated counties in MS are Clarke (where I live) and one along the coast. He said they are trying to get the MDWF agency to open up hunting season--I hope they do it soon, before they infest the Chick. (Souinlovey Creek is full of them, and Buckatunna Creek is getting affected.) Two weeks ago I talked to the owner of a lake which borders the Chick at Quitman, and some land owners watched two gators sneak up and kill a deer which was drinking water out of the lake! I'm presently pushing the MDWF to deal with these gators as it is unlawful for citizens to shoot them. I just hope they do something before someone gets maimed or killed!

Ok, so I guess you guys ARE seeing them! I haven't seen them in that watershed yet, but I just realized that about 90% of my trips there have been in cold weather.

If the MDWFP opens season on them, maybe we can invent a new extreme sport…kayak gator hunting!
