Redeyes have toothpatches. Shoalies do not. Usually.

Smallies don\'t have them. As far as I know just spotted bass and redeye bass are the only black bass species to have them but guads may but I have never caught one of those.

thanks. my lack of experience with river bass brought about that question. i caught a bass this weekend and wasn\'t sure what it was. the only bass that i\'ve seen other than lm and spot is a shoal bass and last year was the first time with any experience with those. this particular fish had the vertical bars like a shoal bass but had a tooth patch. i assumed it was a redeye. didn\'t get a picture thought!:yell: long day casting and it was getting dark so didn\'t even cross my mind!:yell: again! pretty good size for a redeye though. it looked like it was pushin 2 lbs.

As for Guads, when I went after them, I only thought to check one...but that one did have a tooth patch…so I'm assuming that is typical.

Beyond the tooth patch, those Guads had some mean lip teeth...noticeably more abrasive than the other species.

Spotted bass generally have tooth patches, where I have yet to see one in a shoalie. Largemouth generally do not have them, but interestingly enough we see a fair percentage on the Flint with tooth patches.

I guess the one fish I checked was not a big enough sample group.

Googled and couldn't find an "official" web page saying such, but I did find this tidbit someone posted on a TX bass fishing board:

"Largmouths upper jaw extends past the posterior edge of the eye, Guadulupes eyes do not reach past middle of the eye and they also have a tooth patch on the tongue that is absent in the Largemouth. They also seem to be more horizontally compressed. Not only do they have a tooth patch on their tongue but they have more pronounced teeth in their mouth. I can catch a few Largemouths and have a bit of bass thumb but after catching several Guadalupes my thumb is really scratched up. It's much more difficult distinguishing between Guadalupes and Spotted Bass. The Guadalupes have 10-12 vertical bar markings on their sides with horizontal rows of spots above and below their midlateral band. The spots have no vertical bars and no spots above their midlateral markings. The real problem arises when you have a hybrid Guadalupe/Smallmouth or Guadalupe/Spotted."

RedHeron, it is interesting that the Texas Park and Wildlife website does not even mention a tooth patch in regards to the Guad. They 'do' mention the similarities between the Guad and the Spotted Bass. I wonder if the tooth patch is a 'sometime/sometime not' issue. Or possibly if it is a sign of a guad/spot hybrid?

I thought it odd, too, Redfish. Surely there's a science-based species description out there somewhere that states they do, do not, or sometimes have a tooth patch.

Lance, may have found some scientific info concerning the guad and the tooth patch. It is from the Department of Biology of Texas State University.

Here's the Link: http://www.bio.txstate.edu/~tb.....eculii.htm

Under the section "Internal Morphology" they mention the tooth patch!

Also, here is a link to a website which mentions that the 'tooth patch' is a distinguishing characteristic for identification of the Guad.

http://www.bassfishingcolors.c.....pebass.php

Thought you would find this interesting.

Man oh man you guys sure have a lot to contend with down there. Up here when you hit the river you've only got two choices "SMALLIES" everywhere with an occasional LMB. Life is good in OL Kentucky..

The pure Guads I have caught did not have a tooth patch. That doesn't mean others dont though. I will agree with their teeth being similiar to a Spot from my experience. We also have a lot of (Tiger Bass) Smallmouth X Guadalupe Hybrids, which is what a majority of the Guads are.

Thanks, rackfin! That seems to explain my suspicions--i.e. there are some hybrids swimming around!!! Now, I just need to get to Texas and catch one, because personally I do not care if they have a snout like a gar or a tail like a dolphin, I just want to catch one!

Hey Redfish weather or not you know it, but I do know some of you old friends and I asked about ole Lupe' and a buddy of yours said you was very much in love with her and he sent me the picture of her the day you guys split up. I MUST SAY SHE HAS A TOOTH PATCH. So I am posting this pic so all our members can see that fine tooth patch. I must say she's a BUEATY. That's the same knife to clean fish with. Cant understand why she couldn't grow hair on top of her head she's got plenty on her face.

Thanks, RBJ! That's a good one!!! And now, thanks to you, everyone knows why I left her! Yep, it was the eye patch! Every time she winked at me in public with her one eye, she always tripped over a table or bench and cost me a fortune in restaurant repairs! Boy, I miss that girl! She sure could fillet some mean fish! I still think I did pretty good with Sue, though!!!!
