I am getting pretty lucky with the big'uns, especially for August! Must be karma making up for all the nice ones I lost back in the Spring. Shout outs to Ol' Feller and Boyscout for the excellent photography. Anyways here she is:

Congrats TRW!

I was there and that fish was freaking huge. Rich ain't a small guy, BTW.

I was just a little up and across the river from Rich when I hear a "Wahoo" and immedialty got my fly in and started paddling his way to help with photos cause I knew it was going to be big. I don't think I have ever heard Rich yell like that and then say'Oh, it's smaller than I thought". Matter of fact, I've watched Rich on many occasions catch a decent fish and never say a word.

He kind of got excited.

First of all, congrats TRW on the PB! That was a treat to see!

BS is right, keep in mind that's a big guy behind that fish when looking at the pictures. I may go by "ol Feller" but Rich could go by "Big Feller" if he wanted to. The more I looked at it, the more I realized how big that thing was!

Way to go TRW!

Thanks all. I'm glad to hear someone else thinks that fish is over 5lbs.. I tried to get Ol' feller to commit to that but he wouldn't. We agreed to call it 4 and a half anyway. I don't carry a scale and I had just added a ruler sticker to my boat but in the excitement I clean forgot!

It was an awesome strike (on a white zulu BTW), sounded and looked like a toddler had done a cannonball! The "WAHOO!" Boyscout heard was on the first jump when I thought I had a nice Largemouth. On the second jump I saw it was a Smallie and I got real quiet and backed off my drag!

Four and a half is definately a VERY conservative estimate.....incriments of girth on fish that big can really move the scales, if that fish wasn't five, it was knockin' all over five's door!

Just being there to see it made my weekend!

That's an awesome fish for sure WTG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

You can take a little of the green 3m Scotch scrub pads and scuff up the sealant of your rod next to the foregrip, and make marks with a paint pen. I usually just measure from the end of the rod butt and make the marks after the foregrip. For my St. Croixs, the fore grip is roughly 16"s and I'll go another 8" after that so I have a total of 24" that I can lay a fish next to. If you do that, you'll need to re-apply a sealant to the ruler section. All materials can be bought online at mudhole for around $20. It's a very handy way to always have the ruler next to you even when wading. There's also an inlay ruler on clear mylar that rod builders use for the same purpose. I had one put in my custom built rod and have found it to be very handy over the last few years. It really is a nice added feature.
