Hey Fishtaco,

Planning trip home to see Mom in a few weeks in Thibodaux, and of course the kayak will be on the roof.

Any suggestions to fishing in that general area?

She lives right on Bayou Lafourche, but catching fish with 3 eyes is a bit weird.... :)

Tks,

Cajun,

What kind of fishing (fresh/salt) are you wanting to try? I think the wind will determine where you can catch in the salt. Pull up google earth and find you a little bayou to fish. I just looked around a little and found a nice looking bayou that crosses hwy 20 north of Thib. Also, you could try the Mandalay Wildlife Refugre a little south and west of Houma. After the two hurricanes last fall, I'm not sure how the freshwater fish is. Hope this helps.

Here's a great article by Catch Cormier. Use google earth while you read the article because he'll take you down the bayou and tell you where to launch and where to fish.

I don't know about river bassin down that way, not too familiar with it below I-10, but from some of the reports I hear the best freshwater fishing in the state is found in Lake Catouatche right now. You need a stinkpot to get out there though If you've only got the kayak, give Four Mile Bayou a try over near Lake Verret or the Des Allemands area. If it was me though I'd head for the salt while I was in town. The Pointe-aux-Chenes, Dulac, Cocodrie, Golden Meadow areas are not too far from Thibodaux and always hold redfish. Maybe not so much on the specks right now, they should be showing up on the beaches now if you're into surf fishing. Enjoy your visit man, hope you can get on some fish while you're down here.

Thanks, guys. When I get down there, I will report on how the fishing went.

Fishtaco mentioned Lake Catouatche - man, I practically grew up fishing that lake (with a 9.5 outboard.....).

I think the salt sounds like a good idea.........been a long time since I went down to Golden Meadow. Do they still give tickets for 21 mph....? :)

They make good money.....

Used to do business with Edison Chouest and N Am Shipbuilding down there, and they told me that Gary Chouest got a ticket from those cops for doing 90 mph down the bayou in his Fountain boat (he is personal friends with Reggie Fountain)!!!! Clocked him from the road - hillarious. Knowing the Chouest's, I bet that dude got fired...... or maybe just disappeared.....

Remember many weekends fishing on the old bridge by cigars on Grand Isle, and camping there with friends overnight. Also those brackish ponds at the end of the island in the park were always good for flounder. That goes waaayyyyyy back. The damned sheephead were a ***** to pull up to the top of that bridge, especially after all that beer all night.....!

One time I was down there in Fouchon, and they had an event (happens once every year or so - a "jubilee"), where the blue crabs were by the thousands in the surf. I had no idea, and was fishing by myself, and had them hitting my bare feet in the surf constantly. Being "Cajun", I pulled my handy crab nets and chicken necks out of the trunk, and fillled two regular sized ice chests with live crabs in about an hour - a lot of work, as using those nets in the surf - 1 or 2 will keep you busy. My fingers were bleeding. The best part was going home, stopping at everyone's parents house, and dropping off live blue crabs. Talk about instant hero....

Is any of that even still there after Katrina on Grande Isle?

I will be in Thibodaux and Baton Rouge next week. I know it is not likely, but let me know if anyone fishing midweek.I would love to hit a river with you guys.

Everything had been open since Katrina. Then Gustav and Ike came along and ruined everything again. Grand Isle State Park is back open and Fourchon Beach is open to pedestrians only. As far as businesses down there, I know Gail's, Boudreaux's, and Bobby Lynn's are open in Leeville, and the Fourchon Marina & Motel between Leeville and GI. I don't know what's open on GI, but I would assume all the big name places are back open, Cigar's, Bridgeside, Ricky's.

LSUflyfishing and some friends and I did pretty well on the crabs last summer on Fourchon Beach during the Tarpon Rodeo, caught about 12 dozen in about an hour in the surf down there, we also caught a grab bag of species in the surf that afternoon. That morning I caught 4 reds and 3 flounder in the marsh back of Fourchon, it was a pretty fun day.

It'd be nice to take a mid-week trip next week, but I took a day off on Monday to go fishing, I can only use those every so often. If you are in the Baton Rouge area and would like a place to wade fish just PM me.
