This is just like I wrote it on my drewgregory.com site. Its a guided trip report from last week - April 9th.

                                                               4lb smallie vs. 14 year old human…

However, he got a nice 2 1/2lb smallmouth and a largemouth that was about the same size, as well as several other nice fish. Still, the thrill of this trip for me was when Dan and I were in some shoals near the end of the day. Dan is a smart young dude who had listened to the things I had tried to teach him all day. Sure enough he took this new knowledge and applied it by casting his chatterbait into the correct spots and seams. He could whip that baitcaster around as accurate as most people twice his age and sure enough after a couple cranks BAM - fish on! These weren't just any fish either, they were monster smallies. If you could only imagine the young man standing in his kayak in the shoals and being towed downstream by this leaping smallmouth - it was a sight to see. He was just hanging on for dear life and having a great time even though it appeared the smallmouth was indeed controlling this fight. Both times he had a big smallie on they got off right near the boat, but he'll always have the memory of those fish and the unique fight they put up in a river, in a kayak, in the shoals. If anything I think it will push Dan to get back out there and get one that size. I hope he does because he has a lot of skill already for someone his age. His dad, Dave, also caught some nice fish and had some big ones come off right at the boat. I had a great time watching both of them really get into some fish towards the end of the day. It was a typical spring time bite where they all of the sudden turn on around 3 or 4pm when the water has risen a few degrees. I even managed to land a nice smallmouth as well. All in all we had a great time on the water and are ready to do it again!

Thanks for a great day Dave and Dan and as always…

Tight lines and smooth rapids,

Great to see the younger generation out enjoying the wonderful sport of bass fishing. I know they will remember those times when they get older like me!

Drew,

I'm sure Dan will never forget that day. Sounds like he's hooked! Great report and great pictures - I like the one of Dan standing up in the yak! Save some of the smallies for me - I got to get back down there.
